Cloud Gate (The Bean)
Indian-born British artist Anish Kapoor constructed Cloud Gate between 2004 and 2006. Made of 168 stainless steel plates welded together—no visible seams. Measures 33 by 66 by 42 feet, weighs 110 tons. Unveiled in incomplete form during Millennium Park's 2004 grand opening, then concealed for finishing work. Formally dedicated May 15, 2006. Original cost estimate: $6 million. Final cost: $23 million. All privately funded. Kapoor initially disliked the "Bean" nickname, later grew fond of it. The mirror finish is polished so intensely you can see yourself becoming a tourist. Everyone touches it. Everyone takes the same photo. The sculpture still works—reflections distort the city into something strange and compelling, which is what public art should do. Designed to look like liquid mercury frozen mid-movement. Visit at dawn to avoid crowds.
Pro tip: Visit at dawn to get photos without crowds — the sculpture looks best in early morning light.
